art@lauriebarake.comLaurie Barake is a South Louisiana watercolor artist whose work is inspired by her deep Cajun roots and lifelong connection to the culture, land, food, faith, and language of the Bayou Teche region. Raised in an environment where Cajun French was part of daily life, Laurie developed a profound appreciation for the traditions and natural beauty that continue to shape her artistic vision today. Her watercolor paintings seek to capture the spirit of South Louisiana with authenticity, emotion, and what she describes as "heart and soul."
In 1975, Laurie attended the University of Southwestern Louisiana, where she majored in architecture and studied under renowned artist Dr. Elmore Morgan. Although her early adult years focused on family life after marrying in 1978 and raising three children, her creative passion remained an important part of her identity.
Laurie did not begin painting professionally until March 2022, when she was encouraged by her older sister, Linda Moncla, an accomplished watercolor and pastel artist. What began as a late-in-life artistic journey quickly blossomed into widespread recognition for her talent and distinctive perspective.
Since taking up watercolor painting, Laurie has earned numerous awards and accolades, including multiple first-place ribbons and Best in Show honors at the 2024 New Iberia Sugarcane Festival. She was also juried into The Big Easel, Lafayette's annual outdoor fine art event held in River Ranch Town Square, where several of her paintings were sold. Her growing body of work continues to resonate with audiences who appreciate both her technical skill and her heartfelt portrayal of Cajun life and culture.
